The Lycoming (now Honeywell) T55 is a free-turbine turboshaft engine developed in the late 1950s to power heavy-lift helicopters, most notably the Boeing CH-47 Chinook. Built with a two-spool axial compressor and free power turbine, it was designed for durability, modular maintenance, and strong performance across a wide range of conditions. Over time, the T55 has proven itself as one of the most reliable engines in military aviation, evolving through decades of upgrades to meet new operational demands.

Early versions of the T55 produced around 2,200 shaft horsepower (shp) and were used on the first Chinooks that entered service in the 1960s. As requirements for lift and performance grew, newer models like the T55-L-11 and T55-L-712 increased power output and efficiency. Today, the T55-GA-714A serves as the U.S. Army’s standard Chinook engine, producing 4,868 shp with improved fuel economy and better high-altitude and hot-weather performance. Honeywell has even tested advanced variants exceeding 6,000 shp, ensuring the engine can keep pace with future heavy-lift needs.

Each Chinook helicopter is powered by two T55 engines mounted above the fuselage, driving the forward and rear transmissions that power the tandem rotor system. This design gives the aircraft its hallmark ability to lift more than 20,000 pounds of cargo, transport troops and vehicles, and operate effectively in diverse environments worldwide. Thanks to the T55’s blend of reliability, efficiency, and high power-to-weight ratio, the Chinook remains one of the most capable and versatile transport helicopters in service today.
