Dracula’s character is widely believed to have been inspired, at least in part, by the real-life figure of Vlad III Dracula, also known as Vlad the Impaler (Vlad Țepeș), a 15th-century prince of Wallachia (modern-day Romania). Vlad was infamous for his brutal tactics, including impaling his enemies on stakes, which earned him a reputation for cruelty. His surname, “Dracula,” comes from the Romanian word for “dragon” (dracul), which also had connotations of “devil.”
