The tundra stretched endlessly, a wasteland of ice and howling wind where only the strong dared survive. Kaelor the Barbarian trudged through knee-deep snow, his breath a white mist that vanished into the gale. His fur cloak was stiff with frost, his axe rimmed with a thin crust of ice, yet his eyes burned hot with the fire of survival. He was a wanderer, a warrior without a clan, and the tundra was both his enemy and his proving ground. But tonight, he was not alone in the snow—shapes moved in the blizzard, hunched and snarling, yellow eyes gleaming with hunger. The gnolls had come to hunt.
Their laughter split the night, a hyena’s cackle warped into something crueler. From the drifts they sprang, lean and vicious, spears tipped with jagged bone and teeth bared against the cold. Kaelor braced himself as the first of them lunged, the clash of bone spear against steel axe ringing across the frozen plain. With a single swing, he split the creature from collarbone to hip, blood steaming as it hissed upon the snow. But the pack did not scatter—they circled, slavering, driven by both hunger and malice, their voices rising in a chorus that chilled even Kaelor’s iron heart.
The fight became a storm within a storm. Kaelor’s axe rose and fell, each blow cracking bone and spilling life onto the ice. The gnolls swarmed him, clawed hands tearing at his furs, spears scraping across his scarred skin. One leapt onto his back, its jaws clamping against his shoulder, but Kaelor roared, seizing it by the neck and snapping it like dry kindling. The tundra drank deeply of blood that night, crimson rivers freezing into black glass beneath the moonlight. Still, for every gnoll that fell, two more lunged forward, their madness unbroken.
Kaelor fought until his arms trembled, until his breath came ragged, until the white world blurred red around him. He stumbled to one knee, axe heavy as stone, surrounded by the snarling pack. Their leader stepped forward, a towering beast draped in bones, its jaws slick with froth. It raised a jagged spear high, ready to drive it into Kaelor’s chest. Yet the barbarian’s spirit did not waver. With a last surge, he hurled himself upward, swinging his axe in a great arc that sheared the leader’s head clean from its shoulders. For a heartbeat, silence ruled the tundra.
The surviving gnolls scattered, their courage broken, vanishing into the blizzard with yelps of terror. Kaelor stood amidst the carnage, his body battered and bleeding, the snow piled high with corpses. He raised his axe to the night sky, a defiant cry tearing from his throat, echoing across the endless tundra. The storm swallowed the sound, but the land itself seemed to listen. Alone once more, Kaelor pressed onward through the frozen wastes, a solitary figure carved against the blizzard—proof that even on the edge of the world, the will of one warrior could defy the hunger of the many.
