The river cut a wide, sluggish path through the steaming jungle, its surface broken now and then by the glint of fish or the ripple of something larger moving beneath. Along its banks, shadows stretched as the morning mist lifted, and from those shadows rose a shape both towering and terrible. The Spinosaurus, lord of water and land alike, lowered its sail-ridged back into the current and waded forward, its crocodile-long jaws parting in a low hiss. Hunger gnawed at its belly—three days since its last true kill, and in this land of giants, hesitation meant starvation.

With a slow grace that belied its bulk, the predator slipped into deeper water. Its nostrils barely broke the surface, the rest of its bulk hidden beneath the muddy flow. Schools of fish scattered, darting around its shadow, but the Spinosaurus did not strike. No, its hunger craved something greater—flesh and bone that would fill it for days. Patient as the river itself, it let the current carry it downstream, where the scent of fresh meat rode the humid air. The jungle whispered with calls of unseen creatures, but all went silent as the hunter drifted past.

On the opposite bank, a young hadrosaur knelt to drink, its herd grazing farther back in the ferns. The Spinosaurus stilled, every muscle taut, jaws angled just beneath the water’s skin. A single careless step, a lowering of its prey’s head, and the river exploded. The predator lunged upward in a storm of spray and foam, claws like scythes raking into the hadrosaur’s flank. Its jaws clamped shut around the screaming animal’s neck, dragging it thrashing into the depths. Water churned red as the herd scattered in panic, their trumpeting cries swallowed by the trees.

The hadrosaur’s struggles weakened quickly beneath the crushing power of the river and the beast’s teeth. With a final thrash, it stilled, and the Spinosaurus hauled its kill onto the bank, jaws dripping scarlet. The sail along its back flared in triumph as it tore into the soft flesh, its guttural growls echoing over the water. Bones cracked, sinew snapped, and the jungle slowly found its voice again, timidly filling the silence the predator had left in its wake.

When its hunger was finally sated, the Spinosaurus slid back into the river, leaving behind little more than a mangled carcass and a memory of terror. Its sail disappeared beneath the murky flow, a ghost in the water, a shadow that would rise again whenever the hunger returned. For in the land of primeval beasts, there was no greater hunter than the river’s master—and no creature safe once its jaws set their course.
