Beneath the frozen soil of a forgotten barrow, a restless spirit stirred. Once, he had been Hrothvald the Fierce, a warrior whose sword carved his name into sagas sung around the fire. But greed clung to him stronger than loyalty, and when he was buried with his hoard of silver and steel, his spirit refused to yield to the grave. The years passed, snow and moss swallowing the mound, until silence reigned. Then, on a night when the wind howled like wolves across the fjord, the barrow split open, and the draugr rose.

The creature’s flesh was blackened and swollen, stinking of rot yet bound by strength beyond any mortal man. His eyes glowed faintly, like coals hidden deep within ash. He carried no warmth, no heartbeat—only hunger for the treasures he once claimed and rage toward the living who dared to breathe while he rotted. With each lumbering step, frost spread from his feet, curling over roots and rocks alike, as though the land itself recoiled from his presence.

Word spread quickly among the nearby villagers: a corpse walking the hills, breaking open cairns, and slaughtering shepherds who wandered too close. Some said he came at night to sit astride the chests of sleepers, crushing the life from them with his bloated weight. Others claimed he dragged the living back to his barrow, to lie beside him forever as his unwilling companions. No blade seemed to pierce him, no prayer strong enough to bind him. The draugr was a curse given flesh, a reminder that death could not silence a will as bitter as his.

One brave warrior, Einar, swore to end the horror. Armed with a sword blessed in the temple and branches of rowan tied around his arms, he tracked the draugr to his barrow at the dead of night. There, the monster waited among his treasures, sitting on a throne of bones. Their clash shook the earth, sparks flying as steel clashed with undead strength. Again and again, Einar struck, his blade biting but never felling. Only when he drove the draugr from his barrow into the first light of dawn did the creature falter, its rotted flesh smoking as if the sun itself burned away his curse.

With a roar that echoed down the valley, the draugr crumbled into dust, his treasures collapsing into the earth as though the land itself swallowed them. Einar returned, weary but victorious, hailed as a hero who had freed the people from their nightmare. Yet the villagers still speak in hushed tones when they pass the old barrow. They say the ground never grew grass there again, and when the winter nights stretch long and the wind screams through the mountains, one can almost hear the sound of bones shifting, waiting for the day when Hrothvald the Fierce claws his way back to the world once more.
